The new year started like the last year ended, on Cayo Costa. The year started superb! I woke up early under the sliver of a moon and anxiously awaited for the sun to appear over Captiva Pass ,while drifting in the Gulf of Mexico. The surf had a little south swell to it as I eased the boat northward along the coastline of Cayo Costa. Finally I found a spot on the beach that looked like a safe place to anchor. The first spot was not so good so I anchored far from the beach and waded in. After exploring and taking pictures of the beach it was time to move on. The tide had come in which meant I had to swim to my boat. 58 degrees water temperature can make you paddle real fast. That's just what I did. Paddle real fast. The anchor was pulled, and low and behold a beautiful seahorse was attached to the anchor. In all the years of pulling anchors I have never pulled a seahorse up. What a beautiful creature.
I then traveled to a location on the sound side of the Island in search of an old cemetery from the late 1800's. The searching was most enjoyable. I never found the cemetery, but found many clues to help in narrowing down my next search for the old cemetery. The day was long but never long enough especially on days like these.
