I agree with Kaybe that daybreak is the best. Looking one direction we saw the moon and then turned around and saw the sunrise. And the whelk is fabulous!! I was thinking we should be leaving for another beach because I wasn't seeing much for shells, but Capt. Brian was still taking pictures of the bobcat prints (which were really cool), so I wandered down the shoreline and there was the whelk.
